FANTASTIC WEEKEND FOR GEARLINK KAWASAKI AT KNOCKHILL

Ben Wilson rode to a strong third place in the wet at Knockhill on Saturday and followed up with a sensational win in the second encounter on Sunday. This fine set of results extend his series lead in the British Supersport championship to 59 points over nearest rival Alistair Seeley. He rounded off the day by being awarded rider of the day and was presented with a bottle of champagne by Eurosport commentator Jamie Whitham. Despite a tumble in the first race, Jesse Trayler stepped up to the plate in Sunday’s event by clinching his best ever result in the Supersport class with a fine sixth position.

The notoriously changeable Knockhill weather played its part in qualifying and the first race on Saturday. In wet conditions Ben Wilson powered his Gearlink Kawasaki through to second place for a front row start to his first race and in wet and slippery conditions he rode to a strong third place behind Sam Warren and Alistair Seeley.

Jesse Trayler was running within the top 10 and riding well but was caught out on lap 11 of 18 and slid off at the chicane in the wet and slippery conditions.

With Sunday came the sunshine – until the Supersport race took to the grid. The two Gearlink Kawasaki riders lined up side by side on the second row but the start was delayed to allow a passing shower to move away and when the race finally got underway Ben Wilson shot off the start line to take up second position at the first corner. He moved into the lead on lap two but was chased all the way by Alistair Seeley. The pair pulled away from the pursuing pack and an exciting battle took place for the lead between the two riders. Seeley briefly took the lead on lap 17 of 20 but Ben fought back and regained his position at the hairpin a few seconds later. Ben broke the lap record on lap 18 and in an effort to retain his lead broke it again on the penultimate lap to establish a new record of 50.025 seconds - 91.48mph.

Meanwhile, Jesse began his race alongside his Gearlink Kawasaki team mate and moved straight into sixth place. He fought hard for position and made it through to fifth mid race but was pushed back to sixth in the closing stages. Jesse put in a tremendous effort and was rewarded with his best ever result, bringing 10 championship points back to the team.

Ben Wilson – "I am really happy with the win today. The bike ran really well and I just needed to get into a rhythm, I just made a few little mistakes and lost the time I had pulled out on Alistair but I managed to keep my head down and got the win. I want to thank my Gearlink Kawasaki team for putting me a good bike together; it ran perfectly for me all weekend. I am really happy with the lap record and also the Rider of the Day award. It’s a team effort and we all worked together to pull off the win and extend the series lead – albeit only by one point!"

Jesse Trayler – "This is my best result by far, we have really turned it around this weekend. We really have had to up our game after Thruxton and go for a good set of results. We have been in the top 10 from the word go this weekend which is a massive improvement and we are a lot closer to where we need to be. Hopefully I can be up there with Ben soon; to be on the same row as him was such a boost. I was a bit scared going into the race when the track dried out but we hung in there and came away with a fantastic result."

Michael de Bidaph – team owner and manager – "Well I am over the moon, ecstatic really. I don’t think words can describe my feelings right now. The weekend has been good to us; it’s been wet which makes it hard. Ben had to fight hard to finish third in the first race but I knew that if it was dry today Ben would go out there and win the race. Fortunately it did stay dry and Ben just showed his superiority in this field of top class riders. He broke the lap record twice and what more can you say about that!
Jesse has just come of age this weekend; he has done so well and been up there all weekend. Yes he did have an off in the wet but so did other riders. It is so easy to come off in those conditions but today he has finished sixth and had a stonking race so I am really pleased for him and so happy."

SWAN YAMAHA'S HILL GIVES PERFECT FATHER'S DAY GIFT

The Akrapovic equipped Swan Yamaha team celebrated their first double victory at the fifth round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Knockhill as Tommy Hill took a clean sweep of wins whilst Michael Laverty scored a podium in the second race of the day.

Hill took a commanding lead from the pole position in the first race to lead from start to finish securing his second race victory of the season after fighting back from his shoulder injury sustained at round two.

Laverty meanwhile had to claw his way through the field from twelfth on the opening lap to finish sixth in race one. In the second race Hill held off championship leader Shane Byrne to become the first rider to score a winning double this season whilst Laverty took a strong third place for his title bid.

Hill said: "What a good Fathers Day present for my dad today! It has been a hard few rounds and we have been on the pace and then it just hasn't come together in the race. I thought it could have been a lottery again here this weekend with the weather but we have been lucky it was dry so there were no excuses this weekend. I thought if we could get into the front and get into a rhythm then we could be there and I couldn't believe it when I crossed the line in the first one. In the second race to win again was unbelievable and I have to thank the Swan Yamaha team for their hard work to get us up there. It has been fantastic to get the clean sweep of pole, fastest lap and two race wins this weekend. We knew we could push but it is just great for our championship; more points and more podium credits was what we needed and that is what we got and that will prove so important later in the season ahead of the Showdown."

Laverty said: "I made life difficult for myself in the first race that’s for sure with qualifying in eleventh place. I don’t know where I was at the end of the first lap as it was quite hectic and I was over the kerb at turn one and that dropped me down the order and I had to fight back. I had a few minor brake issues at the start but it disappeared and I was able to push on. I was happy to be back on the podium in the second race. I was quite strong towards the end but Shakey had that little bit extra on me in the end. I didn't want to make a stupid mistake and crash out as the points and podium credits are so important. It is great to have a double Swan Yamaha podium in that second race and run close to lap record pace."

Swan Yamaha team owner Shaun Muir concluded: "What a great result to get our first double win in the championship and at the same time the first double for any team so far this season. All the hard work behind the scenes from the team and Tommy since his injury has really paid off and he just reasserted his position as a main title contender this weekend. Michael had a hard opening race but he definitely showed in race two that his confidence is high and he can also fight for the title. All I can say is roll on Snetterton now!"

IT'S ALL IN AID OF CHARITY...

Samsung Crescent Racing, whose bikes are equipped with Akrapovic exhausts from Performance Parts Ltd donated a fantastic VIP experience to help raise funds for the annual ‘Day of Champions’ event held at Silverstone on Thursday to support the Riders for Health MotoGP charity.

Team owner Paul Denning was at the event to offer an auction gift on behalf of the Rizla Suzuki MotoGP team and added the one-off BSB package to help increase the funds raised on the day.

The lucky winner and a friend will get the chance to join the Samsung Crescent Suzuki team at a BSB race of their choice to become guests in the team’s garage, and experience close-up all the ins-and-out of a busy race weekend in one of the world’s premier domestic motorcycle championships. They will join John Hopkins, Jon Kirkham and the rest of the squad for an evening meal, as well as getting the chance to join Hopkins for a scooter pillion ride around the track during the weekend. The lucky winner also received two access all a rea passes and the chance for them to visit the grid before the start of the BSB race, and take a flying lap in the BSB Nissan GTR pace-car. This amazing package, also supported by MSVR, created plenty of interest and eventually sold for £2200.

The ‘Day of Champions’ event is a yearly fund raiser held at the British Grand Prix and assists the Riders for Health charity that supports health workers in Africa to reach remote places, through the use of motorcycles. Rizla Suzuki has been a regular supporter of the charity at the UK event and also at similar auctions in Spain and America. This year the team offered a VIP day including a scooter ride on the back of Álvaro Bautista around the Silverstone circuit during the MotoGP weekend that raised £3100. Bautista also got in on the act and donated his signed boots which he wore during his crash as Qatar earlier in the year – these made a very respectable £500.

Riders for Health’s mission is that the poor of Africa should not suffer and die because of the lack of access to health care and other vital services. It manages and maintains a fleet of motorcycles so that the vehicles do not break down however difficult the conditions that are faced in the delivery of health care and other vital services to rural communities across the continent.

STUNNING WIN FOR GARY JOHNSON AND EAST COAST RACING - SUPERSPORT TT

Akrapovic equipped Gary Johnson took his first ever Isle of Man TT win today in the four lap Monster Energy Supersport race and the first TT win for his team East Coast Racing. Gary has been showing strong form all week with a great third place in the Superbike race on Saturday and a fourth in the first Supersport race on Monday but today was his day.

The 30-year-old from Lincolnshire meant business today when he set off on the four-lap race after rain ceased play on the Island yesterday. Gary was on a mission on lap one and the timing board had to wait for him to come through Glen Helen with his start number being 11, it was a waiting game the entire race. He was soon through and already three seconds up on his nearest rival 16 times TT winner John McGuinness.

This lead kept on extending and by the end of lap two he had a 15-second advantage from McGuinness, Cameron Donald in third and Guy Martin in fourth and Gary was still looking very strong. The East Coast Racing team completed the second fastest pit stop at the end of lap two and therefore Gary lost no time and was looking fast and very comfortable. He was second fastest through the speed traps and was still looking to take a convincing win, he kept up the extremely fast pace throughout the race.  The gap only dropping slightly as he crossed the chequered flag, he had a ten second advantage at the end of the race from John McGuinness in second and Guy Martin gaining third.

Cameron Donald made a mad charge on lap three and was managing to take time off Gary and cutting the lead down, he went out of the race on lap four with a mechanical problem. Gary picked up pit boards around the course telling him the lead had decreased to around nine seconds and the Lincolnshire man upped his game again to ensure he took a solid win.

Speaking with Gary straight after the race he said "I'm just over the moon, winning my first ever TT is something very special and it's an amazing feeling. It's something I've been looking forward to achieving for a long time. The support that you get is unreal I saw some of my mates up on the Mountain including David Knight and they were all cheering me on.

I didn't want to mess about on the first lap and just wanted to get my head down and find a comfortable pace I knew I was fast but the bike just felt great. I didn't feel out of shape at all and just was riding it to how it felt comfortable. I was getting pit boards around the track and it was up to +14 at one point then it came down to +9 so I knew I had to pull the pin a little bit and not back off too much.

The fans were just brilliant all waving their programmes and cheering me on all the way round the last lap it's just an incredible feeling, awesome, it's the best feeling in the world I'm really pleased. I'd just like to thank Phil and all the East Coast Racing boys, Spider and James and the support also from Mick Grant this week, thanks everyone and sorry if I've missed anyone out!! I just hope I can get a good result in the Senior and finish the week on a real high."

COOPER CRACKS TOP TWENTY IN SUPERSPORT TT

Dan Cooper and the Cornwall-based Centurion Racing team picked up their third bronze replica in as many races when they finished in a superb 20th place in this afternoon's Monster Energy Supersport Race Two at the Isle of Man TT.

With the initial race being red flagged on Wednesday due to rain, the race was re-scheduled for 12.15pm today and Dan claimed his best ever TT result to date, although the race was again not without drama.

A superb opening lap of 117.882mph on the 675cc Triumph Daytona saw Dan, from Stroud, slot into 21st place but just as he was making good progress up the leaderboard on the second lap, he was met by a red flag at Ramsey and pulled in. It soon transpired that the red flag had been shown in error so Dan, and a number of other riders, were allowed to continue, later being credited with the time lost.

Unsurprisingly, it unsettled his rhythm slightly although he never slipped lower than 22nd in the race and a flying last lap of 117.876mph meant Dan climbed back up to 20th place at the end of the four laps for yet another bronze replica.

Speaking afterwards Dan said: "I had a good, clean first lap although it didn't feel that fast but when I got to Ramsey on the second lap, I got the red flag so I pulled up, leant the bike against the wall and got off as did about five more riders. Michael Dunlop then went through at full racing speed and the commentator came out and said the red flag was put out by mistake so we all looked at each other, jumped back on and set off again! We lost about a minute in total and it was like having two pit stops so I took it steady to begin with to let the tyres get back up to speed and then had a real good go again on the final lap. I'm still a bit disappointed that my speeds haven't gone up as much as I would have liked but it'll come and the end result of 20th is brilliant. I'm just looking forward to a good, safe ride on the big bike tomorrow and ending the week on a positive note."

Team manager and owner Paul Rees added:
"I keep saying it but we're chuffed to bits with Dan and although the red flag obviously upset his rhythm, the organisers did the sensible thing and credited him with the time. To be on the edge of the top 20 on the first lap was a superb effort but we couldn't work out what had happened on the second lap as his transponder never moved beyond Ramsey. He got back up to 20th by the end though, which in just his second year, is a great ride and we couldn't be happier with Dan's riding. We've had no problems with the bike at all and the team has gelled so well, the fortnight so far has gone faultlessly. On and off the track, Dan's efforts are really pleasing and everyone's been saying how smooth he looks out on the circuit so there's a lot of potential there and plenty more to come. We're just looking forward to the Senior now and are hopeful of another strong result. A fourth bronze replica would be absolutely brilliant."

Centurion Racing will continue to show their support for Help for Heroes, their chosen charity, by displaying H4H logos on the bikes' new livery designed by Rage Designs and team attire. Dan's race helmet has been kindly donated by Arai and will be a one-off design by RichArt showing both the H4H and IOM TT logos. Team Principal Paul Rees, who spent 20 years in Her Majesty's Royal Marine Commandos, was given permission to have the bikes carry the H4H logos in order to encourage the public to be more aware of this charity that supports our Armed Forces, many of whom are making daily sacrifices in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Centurion Racing would specially like to thank Arai, FTR, GPR Racewear, Dunlop, Rage Designs, RichArt, R2 Logo Print & Embroidery, Akrapovic, Daytona, and Alan Smith of Smiths of Gloucester for personally supporting Dan, and all our friends and followers.

GEARLINK KAWASAKI EXTENDS SERIES LEAD AT THRUXTON

Despite being unable to add to his five wins in the series Ben Wilson powered his Gearlink Kawasaki machine through to a third and fourth place at Thruxton in round four of the Fuchs Silkolene British Supersport championship to extend his series lead to a healthy 58 points. Jesse Trayler was out of the points in the first race but rode through to 10th in the second encounter to pick up six championship points.

Ben Wilson dominated free practice and qualifying but was denied pole position by just two hundredths of a second when Billy McConnell put together a flying lap in the dying seconds of the session.

In the short 12-lap sprint race Wilson got the hole shot and maintained his position during the first half of the race but was caught by five riders all hoping to take the win for themselves. The remainder of the race was spent dicing for position with riders slipstreaming into the complex and the lead changing frequently throughout. Wilson headed the group as they ran towards the complex on the final lap but Billy McConnell pulled out of the slipstream and took the lead swiftly followed by Alistair Seeley with Wilson hanging onto third place.

The feature race took place in wet and windy conditions with the spray making visibility almost non-existent. The Gearlink Kawasaki machines had not turned a wheel in the wet prior to this and Wilson had no idea as to how it would perform.

Wilson was second into turn one but in the slippery conditions fell back to sixth as the race progressed. Riders fell by the wayside including Alistair Seeley who retired with an electrical problem and Jack Kennedy who fell from his machine on lap 11. When two more riders went down at Church the red flag brought proceedings to an end and although Wilson had just moved up to third the result was declared on positions at the end of lap 10 and Wilson was awarded fourth place.

Jesse Trayler didn’t make the best of his qualifying session and began race one from a sixth row grid position. He got away to his usual speedy start and gained ground to finish in 19th position. The second race saw Jesse make steady progress through the field and when the race was halted he was awarded 10th place and six championship points bringing his total to 13.

Ben Wilson – "It was tricky out there in the wet conditions. The track was really slippery and I didn’t want to go down so held back a bit to make sure we brought home some points. I had just got up into third when the race was called so was disappointed to be awarded fourth. But that’s how it goes and at least we brought the points back and therefore increased the series lead."

Jesse Trayler – "I have had a bit of a tough weekend here at Thruxton and I am not really where I need to be at this stage of the championship but today I was praying for rain so I could maybe turn the weekend around and I have come away with some decent points and a good end to the weekend with a top 10 result."

Michael de Bidaph – team owner and manager – "The weekend has been good, we knew that Thruxton was going to be one of our harder circuits because it’s not the technical track that Ben likes. I am glad to get this one out of the way and am very pleased with the result because it’s the best result Ben has had here. If today had been dry I would like to think we could have won it, especially after his warm up this morning. But it wasn’t, so he had to play safe and not take any chances but finishing fourth has extended our lead which is great.

With Jesse I am not sure where we are going as yet. He did do well in the race today so at least he has brought some points back. We just have to get him up there in qualifying to give him a better chance of running nearer to the front."

HM PLANT HONDA VICTORIOUS AT THRUXTON

Akrapovic equipped HM Plant Honda’s Shane 'Shakey' Byrne extended his advantage in the British Superbike Championship standings to 15 points following two strong podium finishes at the fourth round at Thruxton including a commanding victory in the second race of the day.

In race one Shakey started from 33rd on the grid and after the opening lap he had moved up the order to seventeenth. Byrne was fighting his way through the field and a determined ride saw him duelling for second place on the final lap with Michael Rutter.

Byrne took the third place and with it the pole position for race two. In the second race he took the lead on the opening lap and edged out an advantage to score his third win of the season and extend his championship lead to 15 points. Ryuichi Kiyonari had a challenging race day and in the opening race took a top ten finish in tenth however in race two he struggled with the conditions and ended in 19th place.

In the Superstock 1000 Championship it was an incident-packed race and Jason O’Halloran started from the third row of the grid. A crash on the opening lap prompted a safety car interval over the next five laps and when the race resumed Jason was running in eighth place and with the leading pack. He was moving up the order but when the race was red flagged at the end of lap eleven Jason was forced to settle for sixth.

Byrne said: “That was the first time I had ridden the HM Plant Honda Fireblade in the wet conditions and I have to say it was great. I had some real vision problems with my visor and to be honest I couldn’t read my pit board and I only knew it was the last lap because I saw the flag on the start line. I thought ‘oh no it’s the last lap’ and I couldn’t have pushed it any harder. I had a good battle with Michael (Rutter) race two was a bit easier as I started from pole rather than the back of the grid! After the first race I was desperate to get to the front and just ride my own race. I was smoother and the HM Plant Honda Fireblade was on rails so I couldn’t have been happier. The track was quite grippy and once I got to the front I was comfortable and in a rhythm. I think I could have even gone faster if I pushed a bit but it has been a great weekend and all credit to the team. I can’t wait for Knockhill now.”

Kiyo said: “This weekend we were feeling better after free practice and finding more confidence and we had good settings for the dry conditions. Then it rained for the races and it was disappointing as we had the same problem in both. We had tried different settings compared to Croft but I just couldn’t get the confidence to push harder and it was at times a bit scary for me. We will work hard to be fast again at the next round as we need to fight for the championship.”

Jason said: “It was a disappointing race for us, mainly due to the safety car period and the red flag with still some of the race to go. It would have been nice just to go the distance as we were closing in over the last lap. In the first laps after the safety car my visor misted up and that made it even more difficult but then I opened it and it cleared so was able to start moving forward and making some passes. It’s a shame the red flag came out as it made it a bit of a non-event for me in the end, but we are still third in the standings so we can move on and aim high again for Knockhill.”

Team Manager Havier Beltran concluded: “After his crash in qualifying Shakey was confident that he could still be up the front fighting for a podium in the races today; he proved to be right and it made it interesting to watch his progress throughout the race. To come through from the back of the grid to third was an outstanding feat, but it could have been a different story if he had qualified better. It showed how confident Shakey is at the moment and he was obviously then ready to challenge for the win in the second race. In race two he again showed his confidence and demonstrated the strength of the HM Plant Honda Fireblade to lead by such a margin so all credit to him. Kiyo we thought had turned it around this weekend and could be running back at the front; he did laps and we were working on the set-up but we are still not completely there. It is obviously not where we need to be; we have the belief in him and know he can perform outstandingly so we need to resolve it for Knockhill."

“Jason had a strong position in hand at the back of the lead group in the Superstock race and he had a problem with his visor misting up and then he was moving forward before it was red flagged. We are frustrated for him as it could have been a podium today but consistency is paramount and he is still third in the overall standings. We are all working for the same goal and we are feeling confident ahead of Knockhill.”

SWAN YAMAHA RETURN TO WINNING WAYS AT THRUXTON

The Akrapovic powered Swan Yamaha team were back on the top step of the podium at the fourth round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship at Thruxton as Michael Laverty secured his first victory of the season in the opening race.

Laverty scored an impressive win in tricky wet conditions as he worked his way through the pack to take the lead on the eighth lap before controlling from the front to take the victory. Tommy Hill had a challenging first race as the team opted for the intermediate tyre and he was later forced to pit and switch to wet tyres. In the second race Laverty struggled with visibility and Hill was able to have a strong performance to finish fourth after a last lap move.

Hill said: "In the first race we simply made a wrong choice of tyre and it is always difficult in those conditions to make the decision. We then had to come in during the race and fire in a wet tyre to get a lap time to give us a better position on the grid for the second race. It was gutting as we had been up there throughout free practice and qualifying and I knew we need to push forward and get the points and the podium credits in race two. In race two I was just chipping away and just missed out on the podium but it was good to be moving back up the order. We have gone from seventh to fourth in the championship so are inside that important top six now and we want to be winning again soon for Swan Yamaha."

Laverty said: "It has been a good day for me with the win in the first race and I felt comfortable but knew I still needed to be cautious as I couldn’t afford to make a mistake. It feels like the monkey is off my back now as I had put pressure on myself to get that win and now it is in the bag and I am inside the top six. In race two I had a front row start but the visibility wasn’t good and I settled for points rather than risk a crash as I had a few moments out there. We have scored some good points today and finally got some of those podium credits."

Team Manager Gary Mason Ekerold concluded: "The conditions have made it tricky over the last two rounds to have consistent results, but that said both Tommy and Michael have been inside the top four all weekend throughout practice and qualifying. In the first race the tyre choice didn’t work out for Tommy, but we are extremely happy for Michael to take his first win of the season as he has put his title challenge back on track. In race two both riders had a sensible race and scored consistent points and are now both inside the top six in the standings which is what is important."
